This definitive study is the most complete and the most revelatory book ever published on Constantin Brancusi, the greatest sculptor of modern times. The author, Radu Varia, an essayist and historian well known in Brancusi's native Romania, offers here the results of years of research and reflection in an original and spectacular presentation of the artist's life and art.

Through the author's illuminating interpretation, we also gain an entirely new view of Brancusi's originality, of his mathematical rigor, of his 'modernity' (which seems simultaneously like an 'antiquity'), of the Celtic inspiration in his work, and of the sculptural and monumental concepts that he shared with the ancient Egyptians. Among previously unpublished documents brought to light for the first time are those relating to Brancusi's never-realized project for the Temple of Meditation in Indore, as well as the monument of Targu-Jiu in Romania which was executed in 1937-38. Paradoxically, this mile-long ensemble is the least known of the artist's sculptures, although it is probably his grandest and most innovative masterpiece.
