This book accompanies the 2010 exhibition at L&M Arts New York that unites the work of friends-and-neighbours Yves Tanguy and Alexander Calder. Book and exhibition trace the subtle interplay between Tanguy's lonely, troubling Surrealist paintings and Calder's geometric abstract sculpture, revealing how the two artists were linked by their questioning of form, their attraction to biomorphic shapes and their obsessions with space and movement.

Their relationship was understood by Peggy Guggenheim, who famously wore one earring designed by Tanguy and one by Calder, a statement that challenged the separation of Surrealism and abstraction, and helped inspire the exhibition's curators. The book's page design is inspired by both artists' work, with paintings, sculptures, photographs and artefacts complemented by historic essays from Jean Paul Sartre and André Breton.
