Creative Impulse is produced to give visibility to the best of visual design. And so it works as a collection of attractive images, useful for getting an update and also for inspiration. But this issue offers many direct or indirect features of interest. The book brings together a multitude of graphic designers and artists such as Sagmeister and Nofrontiere who have their own rhythms and their own obsessions.
In the final analysis a designer inevitably brings into play a conceptual awareness that compels reflection. This makes it interesting that many works have been specially produced, or remixed on the basis of previous works, and that some images originate from exhibitions of the plastic arts. The role of experimentation does not originate in pseudoartistic ambition, but in the need to put a languange to the test; to test-drive a methodological and conceptual vehicle before putting it on the road. An opportunity offered only in some specific contexts, like creative impulse itself. This aspect is obvious from the book's inclusion of the sketchbooks and formal/design notes: they record the moments in which an intuition takes shape. The magical moment in design: giving shape to an idea.
Designers featured are Francois Chalet, Edward Fella, Woodtli, Why Not Associates, Stefan Sagmeister, Superstove, ,Energr Project, Futurefarmers among many others.
