Josef Sudek is one of the most mysterious of all great photographers. His is a personal, even a private vision, yet one which makes use of the most commonplace materials that might appear in a kitchen or a working studio: a vase on a window ledge, a facetted glass tumbler, a marine shell, a loaf of bread, a frosted pane of glass. Outdoors, he photographed the landscpaes with which he was familiar: the parks and gardens of Prague and, during the 1950s, the suburbs of the city.
