The Vitra Design Museum always maintained a close relationship with Verner Panton (1926-1998). This is due in part to the special connection Panton had with Vitra, which worked with him back in the 1960s to develop his now famous chair. For many years the Museum had plans to honour the designer's extraordinarily extensive and diverse work with a large-scale retrospective. However such plans were regrettably never realised in Panton's lifetime.
Conceived as a travelling exhibition, the show shares the same goal as the accompanying catalogue: to document the diversity and quality of Verner Panton's works, rightly understood as an important contribution to the development of design in the latter half of the century. The book contains a complete catalogue raisonne which the editors hope will promote further research on Panton and provide a solid basis for such work.
This richly illustrated publication conveys an impression of the life and work of this important designer. With this retrospective of Panton's work also comes a CD-Rom containing information on the following topics: the Panton Chair, interior designs, textile designs, a Panton 'pattern game' and a short biography of the designer.
