Ettore Sottsass has personally chosen the images and texts published in this volume, which assumes the charcter of an abridged autobiography. He has made a sentimental, not philosophical choice - certainly not an easy one if you consider how vast his production has been over the past fifty years. Sottsass has always been indifferent to being considered part of the avant-garde, even if he has always been a reference point for the architects and industrial designers of entire generations, including the most recent. Sottsass has always possessed a limitless curiosity. This book bears witness to his eclecticism through architecture, furniture, objects, ceramics, watercolours, photographs and writings. The objects created by Sottsass have the capacity to give awareness to human existence, they are charged with ritual and symbolic value that determines a high quality of life. He strongly feels that without this ritual and symbolic charge not only is existence itself stripped of sacred potential, but also the dignity of the individual himself is discredited.
